Host A Rom Com Screening From Home

Right now every Birthday party, anniversary and girl’s night is happening inside and over Zoom/Google Hangouts/Facetime, so we wanted to share a way to spice it up - by hosting a rom com screening! Sure, most nights you’re already having a movie night, but make an event out of it with outfit and food and drink suggestions. Here are some tips plus our viewing guides from our most recent virtual watch party events.

When thinking about pre-screening suggestions, think about: Location of the movie? This will help with drink and food suggestions. Decade the movie takes place in? 50s, 80s, and 90s all have different outfit trends! This can help you when choosing outfit inspo. You could also choose one iconic scene of the movie that would be fun to emulate, and grab all your food, drink, outfit, and decor suggestions from that! Make the night feel special by creating a custom invitation using Mixily, which is always free for free events. We love their contact list feature, so you can easily invite the same group back to the next watch party.

Rom Com Watch Party

Our past virtual screening event guides

Moonstruck

Moonstruck was the first Virtual Watch Party we hosted and it was a blast! Our participants loved dressing up and creating an Italian inspired dinner to fit the movie. The movie is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

About the movie: In her Academy Award winning role, Cher, while waiting for her timid fiancé to decide between her and his mother, falls in love with her fiancé's estranged brother (Nicholas Cage), a bakery worker with a love of opera and life. Supporting actress Olympia Dukakis and screenwriter John Patrick Shanley also won Oscars in this rom com classic. (1987)

The Half of It

For our second Rom Com Fest Virtual Watch Party we tuned into Netflix’s latest rom com The Half Of It!

About the movie: When smart but cash-strapped teen Ellie Chu agrees to write a love letter for a jock, she doesn't expect to become his friend - or fall for his crush. The film is written and directed by Alice Wu. Alice wrote and directed Saving Face in 2005. In a statement Wu said about her new film: “So here I am, staring down the barrel of mid-life, having just made a movie about teenagers. Now that it’s done, I can see a few things more clearly. For one: I used to think there was only one way to love. That A plus B minus C equals Love. Now that I’m older, I see there are more. So many more ways to love than I had ever imagined.”

Sleeping With Other People

For our third Rom Com Fest Virtual Watch party we hosted a special 5 year anniversary of Sleeping With Other People with IFC Films. After the screening we hosted a Zoom discussion with the film’s writer and director Leslye Headland and stars Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie.

About the movie: A good-natured womanizer and a serial cheater form a platonic relationship that helps reform them in ways, while a mutual attraction sets in. (2015)
